So a blog is an online journal or informational website displaying information in the reverse chronological order with the latest posts appearing first, it’s a platform where a writer or even a group of writers share their views on an individual subject. So first of all, a blog is like the shortening of the phrase web log, and then a mash the two together to become a blog. And when we say you know, it’s in reverse chronological order, it means, you know, people are writing different posts. And every time you write a post, there’s a timestamp. So the latest most recent posts start in the front, and then it goes back to the older posts. And that’s basically a blog. And it’s also a platform where either one writer or multiple writers write on a specific topic. So it doesn’t have to be confined to just one blogger. It can be a repository where a bunch of bloggers are writing on it. Now take my website, for example, digital nomad quest calm, it is a blog. So I mainly write on the blog myself, but there are many times where I’ve other writers write on the blog itself. So if you check my blog posts, you can see that not all of them are by Sharon Tseung. Some are from the team. Some are from different writers. So you can see that outline on the website. Another one you might think of is like refinery, 29, or thought catalog, right? So they are mainly blogs, because what they specialize in is basically articles. And a lot of different people are writing these articles for refinery 29, or thought catalog. Now what’s the difference between a website and a blog. So a website can be a blog, like for example, the ones I just mentioned, digital nomad quest, and thought catalog and refinery 29, were their main purpose is to write these articles for you. But also, a website can have a blog, and the blog might not be their primary purpose. So for example, you go on forever 20 one.com. You can see obviously, people shop online for products on the website. But if you scroll all the way down, they have a blog as well, where they write different posts. And that could be a marketing strategy where they inform their readers. And they also get ranked higher on Google search, because they are writing these blog posts, even canva.com. They have a blog as well, if you go to learn, and then blog, they actually have different blog posts around different things. So their specialty is their service, though, where you can create different design templates on the website, you can create printables, you can create artwork on there. And the primary purpose is letting you use that tool. And the blog is just another marketing strategy as well. And then there are also websites that just don’t have blogs, in general. So they might be selling products, they might be selling services, same thing, but they might not have a blog. So a website can contain a blog, it can be a blog, or can just not have a blog at all. Now what is the reason for blogging so as you can see, I mentioned that people do have blogs, even when their primary purpose isn’t the blog, right, so the ones I mentioned where Canva and forever 21. Again, it has a marketing purpose where they can drive traffic to it from these blog posts. So that is one reason to start a blog to help for organic traffic to your website. Another reason is if you are not trying to start a business, it can be fun to just write and express yourself through a blog. You know, a blog is a great outlet for kind of expressing yourself and expressing your passions and one of my favorite reasons is you can really build a business from just building up a blog because you can end up starting to create that authority in your niche and then also sell products or services that’s how a lot of people start off right if Canva and if forever 21 have blogs as well what’s not stopping people from for example creating a blog about ramen and then selling their own ramen or opening up their own restaurant right this is a great way to market it it’s goes back to the first point but essentially like you can start creating that authority and getting that traffic first and then deciding if you want to monetize your blog or not you could just do it for personal reason or you can you know build a business around it and like monetize your passion so if you are passionate about music or passionate about food or whatever you can talk about it and then find a way to make money from it. So that’s why I love blogging and that’s why I think you guys should try it out. So I hope you guys enjoyed this episode on what is a blog and what’s the difference between a blog and a website hope that breaks it down for you guys if you guys like this video make sure to comment below and let me know does this clarify what a blog is versus a website and make sure to subscribe and hit the bell button to be notified of my latest videos and I’ll see you guys in the next one.Transcribed by https://otter.ai
