Here are notes I took at FinCon 2019 on a seminar by Monica Louie about Advanced Facebook ad strategies. Facebook ads are great to learn for all businesses, and these tips were quite good if you’re trying to incorporate them for your business. Disclaimer: While all attempts are made to present correct information, there is a chance I’ve written notes incorrectly!
Monica started with a finance blog – Our Debt Free Family. Later she sold it and decided her Facebook ad business was what she wanted to be working on. Monica has managed $1 million of ads and over 500 clients so far.

The Facebook Ad Steps
- Provide an amazing offer
- Target the right audience
- Create an eye-catching ad – grab their attention first, then have them take action.
Example case: Running a traffic campaign, direct users to a monetized blog post
The aim was to get to 10 cents per landing page view and was able to get it to $0.07 per landing page view about how to watch football without cable
Other examples:
- $0.04 per landing page view for an article on “20 best jobs for stay at home moms”
- Example copy used: “I had never heard of #5 before… :O”
Build Credibility & Establish Authority
Example cases:
- $0.13 per link click: “Rental properties mean I no longer have to work a 9-5 job!” – link text
- “I’m 34 years old and own 8 homes. Here’s how I did it.”
- “It’s a strategy that combines a low cost of living and a frugal mindset.”
Example cases:
- “From military deployment to growing a 7 figure online business”
- $0.22 per link click. Kindlepreneur
- $0.17 per link click with people’s faces + family
Facebook Ad Tips
- Make sure to install your Facebook pixel (can use Pixel Me)
- Social proof is priceless. You can use these as ads
- Respond to comments and questions on ads
- Drive leads with your funnel.
Example case:
- $0.34 per lead for Smart Money Mamas, directing people to free meal planning printable / grocery list template.
Make sure to be mindful of whether you’re doing Instagram ads or Facebook ads. The text is below for Instagram ads, and text is above for Facebook ads.
Example case:
$0.50 per lead – free preparation book to learn how to build a Pinterest VA business
- Bright yellow background image + more copy + Pinterest VA images
- Emojis break up the copy and make it easy to read.
- When switching to Instagram it cost 0.41 per lead over $0.50 per lead
- The suggestion is to start with Facebook, then switch to Instagram when you’re scaling up
Example case:
- $0.87 per lead through Instagram story ads — static image on 2nd card
Retargeting Campaign
Example case:
- $7.70 per sale for a $247 product (for Pat Flynn’s work)
- Kindlepreneur – $4.90 per sale for a $97 product – Publisher Rocket
Tips on how you optimize your ad targeting – How often do you kill ad groups and how big is your audience size?
- Start with lookalike audiences
- Campaign budget optimization
- Don’t adjust budget more than 20% in a 7 day period
- For US – 1-10 million people
- She teaches students to start spending $5-10/day
- For her clients, she spends much more
- Start with all placements, then drill down to see which placements are performing best.
- Typically Facebook news feed and mobile news feed are the best performers.
- For retargeting campaigns, you want to only do all placements as it’s a smaller audience that you’re working with
Conclusion
I loved that Monica was transparent with numbers she’s achieved for her clients. I’m going to reference this blog post when I start running ads for Digital Nomad Quest to see if I can meet those numbers as well. It’s great that she revealed numbers of similar types of clients as it helps me understand my own targets.
