This is the digital nomad quest podcast with Sharon Tseung. teaching people how to build passive income, become financially free and design the best lives.Hey guys, it’s Sharon from digital nomad quest. And today I want to talk about the difference between blogs that make money and blogs that don’t. So a bit of backstory, I feel like I know a lot of bloggers now that make a crapload of money on their blog, like maybe 50 grand a month in passive income, right. And I also know a bunch of bloggers who actually have a decent amount of traffic on their blog, but don’t make really much money at all on their blogs. And I know people who are frustrated because they’re in that state and they don’t know how to get out of it. So a bit about my background. I have been blogging for around four years. I’ve also been successful on building a niche site that utilizes affiliate marketing and it still makes me passive income and cash flows to this day. So that’s why I can talk about this as well, as you know, meeting a lot of other people who’ve done this. And I know that like, I know what sets those people apart that are actually making a killing on it versus those who aren’t. So now let me talk about the differences. So what I find is one of the big things that people forget to think about is branding. So the first thing is, you want to make sure that when you go to your website, people should understand what it’s about, and what they’re going to get from it, basically. So when they go on a website, they should know how they’re going benefit. Because if you’re just saying a bunch of random stuff, and not really honing down on certain topics, people are going to bounce off of the website because they don’t know what to expect from the site. They think the stuff that comes out is going to be random. It’s not really focused on a specific niche. So niche down and be specific with your branding. Secondly, a lot of these blogs don’t really consider SEO and SEO is so important when It comes to blog traffic. So I guess if you’re not really getting traffic at all, this is something you need to think about. Right? So basically, I’ve seen these bloggers who don’t really make money on their blogs, they’re making titles that no one’s going to search for. So how are they going to even find your blog? if no one’s searching for those keywords, right? You want to make sure your blog posts are searchable. And you can find it through Google and things like that. So you got to think about that title for your blog posts and think, Okay, well, people type in like how to like blah, blah, blah, right. And then if you’re going to go into it further, you should actually use tools like Keyword Planner, or even like sem rush. That’s what I use, right to make sure that the keywords are things that people are actually searching for, and they can find your blog posts through it. And if you’re going to go deeper into SEO, you should use that keyword within the blog post as well within your meta description, your tags and things like that. Another mistake that people make is they use that blog. personal reasons only, it really depends on your purpose. If you are just blogging for fun, you don’t want to monetize it. That’s cool, right? But if you actually do want to monetize it, you got to think about why people would even come on your site. When I first created digital nomad quest calm, I use it for personal reasons. I used it to vent, I sit to talk about my feelings. And I didn’t make enough informational content from the start. And now I’m really focused on creating that educational content that people can benefit from when they come to my website. And the you know, the feelings kind of posts where I’m talking about my personal journey that actually does get a lot of engagement and views. But it can’t all be that unless you’re just like a super interesting person. It’s just a lot easier to monetize your blog if you are creating stuff that people want to read and they can get value from. Okay, so if you’re just typing stuff, you’re inventing your titles, they’re not SEO optimized and you’re just talking about your day or something. It’s just not as interesting to people if they don’t even know who you are. All right, so they usually come on to websites. To get educational value so for me for example, I talk about digital nomad adding passive income, entrepreneurship and I kind of marketing and stuff, right? So these are things that I try to teach on my blog, as well as my YouTube channels. And then people who come on to my website and my YouTube, they will know what they’re getting out of it and they will come back for more because they know that I am that thought leader in that niche. So maybe you are getting that traffic, but you are not getting sales and you are not monetizing your blog. What is the reason for it? Well, most bloggers make money from affiliate marketing and from creating their own courses or products, things like that. So ads, yes, you can make money from them. But I think usually the biggest driver is affiliate marketing and selling your own products. So if that is the case, you have to think of it in terms of how you can monetize it that way. So you got to think about products that you really resonate with and you can talk about that have benefited you that can benefit others if you’re going to do affiliate marketing Right. So for example, for me, ConvertKit and teachable, those are great companies that I like love that I love those products. And I would totally teach people how to use them and bring awareness to them. So if I’m going to do affiliate marketing for these products, how am I going to create posts around it? Right? So if I’m going to create blog posts around it, I might talk about why email marketing is important if I’m going to advertise ConvertKit, right, why email marketing is important. Which email marketing solution is the best, comparing different email marketing solutions, how to use certain functions within the email marketing platform, these are things to think about that you can create tutorials around. You can create tons of blog posts around it right and bring into it ConvertKit at the end, you got to you got to create the posts with that in mind as well. You can’t always just post anything you want about your day or whatever. Like there has to be some purpose if you want to not only do for personal reasons, but also make money from it. And I think affiliate marketing is great because you are not only helping others, you’re also helping yourself. And you kind of have to both. Because sometimes if you help others and don’t help yourself, you burn out, right, you have to kind of do both. So that’s why I think affiliate marketing is a great way monetization. And I think it’s okay for people to sometimes create posts. With that in mind when it comes to selling your own courses and things like that. Another thing people don’t think about is how the marketing strategy will be for launching those products. And not like doing a whole launch strategy for it. People might just put a course out onto their blog and just hope that people will buy it. But if you don’t really have a marketing strategy behind it, it’s a lot harder to get sales. So those are the differences. I think of blogs that make money versus blogs that don’t it’s a lot about catering to your customers. So one you have to think about how you can help people like being that resource for them when they come on to the website. to your blog posts, and next you also have to create your content with that goal in mind and monetization sometimes. So if you want to upsell a course, or if you want to recommend products, you have to think with that also in mind. So I think these are the certain factors when it comes to traffic and conversions to create sales on your blog.So I hope you guys enjoyed this episode. Please make sure to rate review and subscribe.
